Who has ever thought of needing a toilet bowl light?  That is not something people would normally think of as a necessary product.  But whoever thought of this invention is genius.  It’s a whole lot cooler than it sounds.  Even I was a little skeptical when I first tried the IllumiBowl night light, but I immediately realized that this was a great invention.  Here is a comprehensive, unbiased review of the product, and then I share my personal opinion and my sister-in-law’s opinion about the product.

Assembly

No assembly required.  The device needs 3 AAA batteries that are not included.  The battery cover pops off and back on with ease.  There is a sheet of instructions under the battery cover.  On installation, you have to adjust the light strap to fit your toilet bowl.

Installation

Put both the toilet lid and toilet seat up.  Attach the light part using the one suction cup to the inside of the toilet bowl on the rim, just below where the seat will sit.  Get it as close to the top as possible.

Attach the big square part (battery pack) to the toilet using the 4 suction cups, with the sensor facing the door or the walkway to the toilet.  Make sure to put it where peoples’ legs won’t hit it when they sit down.

Slide the extending strap behind the battery pack part to hide the excess.

Looks

Although the toilet is white and the Illumibowl is white, the Illumibowl is clearly visible on the outside of the toilet.  It is small but still shows.

Walk about 3-4 ft in front of the sensor and then it lights up.  Changes colors from red to orange to yellow to teal to green to dark blue to pink to purple to white.  9 colors.  You can set it to one color by pressing the button on the battery pack square part when the light turns the color that you want constant.

Opinions of a Husband and Wife with No Children

(but one due in November!)

We laughed when we installed the IllumiBowl night light because we are a young married couple that has a light for their toilet.  However, it didn’t take us very long to realize how cool this invention is.

We had been using a night light in the bathroom that you leave plugged into the outlet and that shines green constantly when it’s sensor does not detect light.  It is even on during the day when the bathroom light is off and no one is in there.  I bet it is a waste of some of our electric bill, no matter how small.

What we like about the IllumiBowl night light is that it is motion activated, so it only comes on when someone walks in the bathroom, and that it gives gentle, but enough, light, so it doesn’t blind us and wake us up more when we have to get up in the middle of the night to pee.  We assume it does not waste energy because it (1) isn’t plugged into an outlet all the time, (2) only comes on when it is DARK and when the sensor DETECTS MOVEMENT, and (3) is battery powered.

I don’t know exactly how long the battery lasts but I can update this post when we have to change the batteries.  It has already been over two weeks though, just using it on our nightly bathroom trips, one for each of us.  I could assume if you have children, they will want to leave the bathroom lights off during the day so they can see the lights, so it may run out of battery faster than ours will.

Also, the colors are fun to watch while sitting there and doing business.  Although I will say that the red color is a little ominous…

I was also amazed at how accurate the marketing pictures are to what the IllumiBowl night light looks like when installed in a normal bathroom.  The light comes through between the bowl and the seat, fills up the bowl, and makes a soft reflection on the toilet seat cover and the walls.

Opinions of a Husband and Wife with a Potty Training 2-year-old and an Infant

I (Kait) was delighted to see my 2-year-old niece’s first reaction to the IllumiBowl night light.  She started laughing and clapping and pointing and laughing some more.  She knows her color blue so when the blue light showed, she named the color!

From my sister-in-law:  “[My 2-year-old girl] really likes it!  It hasn’t made her go to the toilet more, but she enjoys going.  Also, it has been really awesome while having an infant because you don’t have to turn on the lights and cause restlessness when you get up!

“It’s actually a lot more useful and cooler than I thought it would be.  I feel like I’m saving energy.”

She also mentioned that it could possibly help little children who are afraid to get up in the middle of the night when they have to go to the bathroom to not wet the bed as an alternative.  Some children can’t even reach the switch for the bathroom light, and this gives children easy light they can reach just from walking into the bathroom. Mom and dad could sleep and not have to clean up a mess in the morning!

Review Summary of the Coolest Night Light Ever

If you have never tried the IllumiBowl for yourself in your own home and think that it is a funny concept, I’ve been there.  I still agree that it is a funny concept, but I am amazed at the practicality of the device and how cool the colors look.  Thank you Matt and Michael at IllumiBowl and congratulations on what your company has accomplished!
